Lysosomes were discovered by Christian de Duve in 1953 . They are found in eukaryotic cells. Lysosomes are knows as suicidal bags.
Structure:
They are spherical bodies with single unit membrane. Inside this unit membrane there is a lipid layer. Inside the lipid layer there are Hydrolytic enzyme mixture. That can digest material within the cell. Nuclease, Proteases, Glycosidases, Lipases, and Phospholipidases are the enzymes present in the Lysosomes.
Functions :
1. Intra cellular digestion
They digest carbohydrates, lipids and proteins.
2.Autolysis ;
Cause self destruction of cell on insight of disease and they destroy the cell.
3 Autophagy;
During unfavourable condition their own cell organelles like mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulam.
4. Exocytosis ;
They release their enzymes outside the cell to digest other cells.
